Exmouth - Whales, quad bikes and our first snorkelling

Exmouth is an interesting town and worth a visit - there is quite a bit of development happening, including a canal estate.  Our caravan park had a lovely Italian restaurant "Pinocchio's" attached so we enjoyed a couple of meals there!

We watched about half a dozen groups of whales jumping around in the water from a vantage point up at Vlamingh Head lighthouse.  Since there were so many we decided it would definately be worth going out on a boat to see them at close quarters.

We practiced our snorkelling at a beach on the Exmouth side of the peninsula and then drove around to Turquoise Bay (part of the Ningaloo Reef) in Cape Range National Park (photos in next post).  We are definately keen to camp there on a future trip when we can do a lot more snorkelling when the kids are older!

Since we were hanging out for the school holidays to finish before going down to Coral Bay, we decided to give Quad Biking a go as well!

Whale sharks visit Ningaloo Reef from March to July and you can swim or dive with them.  There is a lovely children's book about one visiting the area called 'Ginormous Jack'

We picked up some cheeky monkeys at the caravan park in Exmouth...

Then we had to slow down to let the emu's cross the road!
Vlamingh Head Lighthouse at Exmouth - right at the start of the Ningaloo Reef

View from lighthouse - Exmouth is on the far side of the peninsula and then the reef is on the Western side.

Practicing with mask and snorkels at the beach next to Exmouth - lovely crystal clear water...

Who is this fish??  She wasn't too keen on the snorkel though...

Jack lost his body again!
The sea was incredibly calm the afternoon we went whale watching and it seemed to be affecting the whales in the same way - there were lots of them surfacing but we only saw one breaching.  It was still amazing, especially when they put the sonar down and we could listen to their conversations!  Regular chatterboxes they are!

Waving hello!

A whale breaching!

Chatterbox whales!

What a sunset shot!!!

This guy was a poser but we weren't complaining!

Sunset over Exmouth - stunning!

Our quad bike instructor, Roger, moved up from Perth two years ago and bought this business, having only ridden quad bikes 3 or 4 times before!  He said he'd never go back and we can see the attraction!  I was a bit nervous so went by myself at the back, hence the sun shirt used as a dust shield!  Roger said he was sure my 'inner bogan' would come out and he was right!  Phil was surprised (and I think a bit miffed!) when I overtook him on the beach on the way back!!

Gorgeous Gorges in Karinjini National Park

We'd heard from other caravaners that Karinjini National Park, near Tom Price Mine, was a must see and the best gorges on their trip, so we made the trek down from Port Hedland, knowing we would have to do some backtracking if we wanted to go back to Dampier to see Red Dog!  But it was definitely worth it!

We stayed in the Dales Gorge Campground and it was the first time Phil got to use his generator so he was pleased!  It had very clean long drop toilets and not much else.   Our bathing each evening consisted of walking down a steep path to the nearby Fortescue Falls and having a swim in the clear crisp water!  There was even a brown snake sunning itself on the rocks...  We were in the middle of nowhere with no moon so the stars were incredible!!

The gorges were an amazing deep red colour from the iron ore but not sure if the photos do them justice.  We kept trying to get that perfect shot with the red gorges, yellow/green grasses and blue sky....

Fortescue Falls - not a bad bath tub!!

Weano Gorge - we had to swim the next bit!

Happy kids!!

Happy family!!

You could easily spend a week here exploring all the gorges but we were limited by how much Jack and Jess could do so we would love to come back when they are older...

Best mates!!
