Hall's Creek and the Wolfe Creek Crater
I didn't understand what the lady in the Hall's Creek caravan park meant by her parting comment at check in - "Watch out for the Bogey Man" - but Phil explained it was a line from the movie 'Wolfe Creek' which is a horror movie that takes place at the crater. It's about a serial killer who attacks a group of travellers so I've decided not to watch it while we are on this trip!
The meteorite crater really is amazing - it's about 130km south of Hall's Creek off the Tanami Track, which is all dirt, but not the worst we have been on! After all this driving, you come to a low rise hill in the middle of really flat country. The rim is about 35m high and the base just over 50 m down - it used to be about 120m deep but has gradually filled over the years. Apparently pieces of meteorite were found over 4kms away! You can imagine the blast zone when you look at how flat the surrounding landscape is...
We climbed to the top and then down into the middle, where there is like a little salt pan with some small trees and wildflowers in the centre. It was incredibly hot and the kids did really well with the climbing. We had fun doing cooee's as we were the only people there!

Is that it???
Yep!
Jack making friends with a lizard!
He was still there on the way back so we left him some water!
Our first view inside the crater
Resting on the rim
On our way into the centre
A petrified baby snake!
Right at the salty centre - surrounded by wildflowers - quite pretty really!
Before the climb out!
We did it!
Hall's Creek itself had a nice cafe at the visitors centre and and it was interesting to drive out to see the ruins of Old Hall's Creek along the river and see the China Wall - which is a naturally occurring wall that really looks man made!
